Vintage Sewing

I have just started buying vintage patterns. So far I have mostly bought little girls patterns because I hope to make my peanut girl her clothes when she is a bit older. Little girls clothes in the 50s and early 60s are so sweet! The adult patterns I intend to make some collages with and frame some for my sewing room. In my head the collages look really cute, I hope they translate as cute on paper.

The two patterns on the ends are from Amanda. Thanks, honey!

How cute are these sailor suits?? I promise not to make
one for my son. That would be awful!

I also just signed up to participate in Tie One On, which I am so excited about! I found a couple patterns I want to try and my "valentiney" fabric, so I am ready to go. I choose the cherries fabric because I didn't see any Valentine fabric at my Joann's store that wasn't cheezy. And my kitchen is done with vintage cherries and fruit, so I thought the cherry fabric would be kinda cute.

PS. All you experienced sewers out there-should I trace the vintage patterns onto new pattern tissue or should I try to use what is in the envelopes? The sizes aren't a big deal because she'll need to grow into all of them.

I always trace those olders patterns onto tracing paper. I bought mine at Nancy's Notions, on line. It is item ITEM: PP3 at the website. I buy brown manilla envelopes and stick traced pattern in it with a label.

Glad to see you are doing this now. I did not start making Em clothes until she was older.. and man you miss out on a lot of great cute little clothes that way. but I have to agree, the 40's and 50's stuff is way cute!

Most definitely trace! I trace ALL my patterns. What I use it swedish tracing paper. It's heavier than tissue paper, so it holds up well. You should check it out

Hey Claire! I have 2 grocery bags full of vintage children's patterns... I'm keeping them for the nostalgia and the graphics... but there's no way I would attempt to make them! LOL! You're more than welcom to come check them out anytime! We can scan the covers and trace the patterns for ya :)

Very cute patterns! I love vintage patterns too, but I was also worried about cutting them up! My mom always traced her patterns onto plastic sheeting with a sharpie. The plastic was like you would use for a painting dropcloth, if that makes any sense. It holds up much nicer than tissue paper. Just thought I would share!! I have also been checking out the Tie One On site. I think I might join in on that too! There is just too much fun stuff out here, and not enough time to do it all!

I have been drooling over vintage patterns on ebay myself! Especially the "hollywood" brand patterns. Sooo cute! Can't wait to see your finished products!!!

Being lazy, I would have said cut the tissue patterns. But I've been out voted. When tracing something I use cheap interfacing as its easy to pin thru and you can see thru it. You used to be able to buy it in packs.

They look like fun projects. I made a lot of clothes for Frankie till about 2nd grade than it was over. Enjoy it while it lasts!
